The band cannot function without parents who are willing to give a little time to help here and there. Whether it's chaperoning a band trip, selling hamburgers at the concession stand or hemming a uniform, parents are the behind-the-scenes troops who take care of all those things that the staff can't or doesn't have the time to do. Our band staff is great, but they simply can't do everything and they need YOU to help the band be a success!
IMPORTANT!
To volunteer at any school function, you must do the following:
- Register as an ADDitions School Volunteer for the current school year. To register, you must complete the ADDitions online application form with Orange County Public Schools. Please allow 3-4 weeks for them to process your application. You must update your application each school year that you wish to volunteer.
- Print and complete the Chaperone Application and turn it in to Dawn Williams. Please note that even though this is called a "chaperone" form, it applies to all volunteer positions. If you are intending to volunteer for a specific date, please put that date on the form. However, if you plan to volunteer throughout the year (for example, to chaperone for several away games), please leave the event date blank.
If you are wanting to volunteer (and we hope that you are!), here are some of the areas that can always use extra help.
Concessions
If you've been to a high school football game, you've probably bought something at the concession stand. Now here's your opportunity to get on the other side of that counter and help the band make some money! Concession volunteers are needed to help in the concession stand at the ERHS football stadium during all home games. Did you know that the band also operates the concession stand at home soccer and lacrosse games, as well as other events held at our stadium? We do this because the general band fund profits directly from the concession stand sales.
Chaperones
Guess who gets into football games and competitions for free and doesn't have to deal with the hassle of driving to away games and events to see the band perform? Chaperones, that's who! Chaperones travel to all football games and competitions with the marching band, as well as to MPAs (Music Performance Assessments) and other events with the Concert and Jazz band and Color Guard. They help keep our students safe, make sure students follow all the band conduct guidelines and supply the students with water and first aid when necessary during all marching events. Chaperones are usually needed at the same call time as the students and always ride the bus with the students (i.e., free ride!). You don't have to chaperone for all events, just the ones that you can and want to do. To be a chaperone, you must be signed up with ADDitions through the school and submit a chaperone application (which will need to be approved by OCPS).
Pit Crew
The pit crew is responsible for loading, unloading and transporting all pit instruments (xylophones, vibraphones, bells, tympany, etc), as well as larger instruments like tubas and color guard equipment to football games and other band performances. The pit crew also takes water jugs to football games to make sure all the band members are provided with water during the games. And just like chaperones, pit crew volunteers get into football games and competitions for free!
Uniform Crew
Volunteers for the uniform crew should be willing and able to lend a hand in distributing, putting away, mending and spot cleaning uniforms. Volunteers should be able to be at the school prior to the student call time on game days, as well as at times during the week if needed by the uniform coordinators. Volunteer for the uniform crew and help keep our marching band looking good!
Please consider volunteering today and lend a hand in making the ERHS band a success! If you would like to help, please e-mail Dawn Williams at cornerstonepc@bellsouth.net.
